Freedom Friday's

It's been a bit of a reflective time around here of late. Perhaps it is the warmer weather, daylight savings and just the general feel around the place but it's got us thinking about our Friday night's pre children v's Friday night's post children. 

Fran has a brilliant tradition so we couldn't help but get her to share it with you all, because it is simply brilliant. 

Here's Fran's story. 

I don’t know about you, but sometimes by Friday my mum mo-jo is lacking. Inspiration went out the door mid Wednesday and I am just clinging on until Friday night when my partner is home and it’s the weekend. Back in my pre-kid days Friday nights were exciting! Drinks after work, long dinners with friends, dancing til late. Oh how times have changed.
Lamenting this fact one Friday my bestie and I decided to implement freedom Friday’s. We would put some tunes on, crack open a bottle of wine and let the kids run wild. Takeaway pizzas or easy dinners on the menu. The kids absolutely love it, and we got a little sense of ourselves back. Even when not drinking alcohol (pregnancy and breastfeeding tend to limit our plans somewhat) we still have our freedom Friday’s. A chance to relax, reconnect with our friends and let our children go wild. Win win! Here are some rules to abide by:
  • Don’t worry about the mess
  • Let the kids choose what they would like to play - the more unstructured the better
  • Have dinner organised or order takeaways so you don’t need to stress
  • Enjoy some “me-time” with your friends. Of course there will be interruptions and tears - but surrender to them. Freedom Friday is a time to let go of your rules and chill.
Here are some yummy drinks (mocktails and cocktails) from the Whole Journey to provide some inspiration! Just add or subtract the alcohol depending on your circumstances! 

Cucumber Moscow Mule

 Ingredients:

1⁄4 cup freshly squeezed, organic, lemon juice
1 teaspoon zested ginger
1⁄4 organic cucumber, finely sliced
12 drops dark liquid stevia
18 ounces sparkling water

Directions:

– Combine lemon juice, ginger, cucumber, and stevia in a pitcher or jar
– Add sparkling water to mixture and stir
– Pour over ice into 2 cocktail glasses and add vodka
– Garnish with lemon wedges and enjoy!

Blueberry Basil Mocking Jay

You can eliminate the “mocking” if you like and add a little dose of booze. Delicious and packed with antioxidants and healing properties either way.

Ingredients:

1⁄2 cup fresh lemon juice
2 cups fresh blueberries
1⁄4 cup torn fresh basil leaves
15 drops of dark liquid stevia
4 cups water
Ice

Directions:

– Start with fresh lemon juice in a pitcher
– Combine blueberries, basil leaves, and stevia with lemon juice; muddle
– Add water; let stand 30 minutes
– Press through a fine sieve into a medium bowl; discard solids
– Return mixture to pitcher and add alcohol (optional)
– Serve over ice and garnish with organic blueberries and basil leaves if desired

Strawberry Coconut Electrolyte Margarita

We put back all the electrolytes that the alcohol can pilfer with the coconut water and Himalayan pink salt in this uber-refreshing slushy delight.

Ingredients:

1 pound organic, fresh strawberries, hulled
1 cup coconut water
2⁄3 cup freshly squeezed lemon juice
15 drops of dark liquid stevia

Directions:

– Add strawberries, coconut water, lemon juice, and stevia in blender and blend until completely smooth
– Taste, add extra stevia if desired
– Serve over ice
– Optional: Wet the rim of the glass with some fresh lemon to wet, then dip in Himalayan pink sea salt

BAIE ROSE’ SPRITZ

Ingredients:

  • 60ml BAIE rosé wine
  • 60ml sparkling wine
  • 30ml Aperol
  • Orange Zest
  • Orange peel to serve

Directions:

  • 1 Place spiced ice ball in glass and pour over rosé, sparkling wine and Aperol.
  • 2 Sprinkle Orange Zest.
  • 3 Swirl glass with ice ball and garnish with an orange peel.
